“Today, before I take action where someone else is concerned, I will deploy the people pleasers shortlist inventory by asking myself these three simple questions:
1. Was I asked to do it?
2. Do I want to do it?
3. Is it good for me to do it?
When I can be honest with myself, I can be honest with others. They may not like it, but they will still love me. “Yes” and “no” are complete sentences. If “no” feels harsh, try:
“I prefer not to.”
How can someone argue with a personal preference?
In addition to setting me up for resentments, saying yes to things that I don’t want to do and saying no to things that I really want to do is a betrayal of self.”
